Brand photography for ReDress in Honley

Huddersfield brand photography
I headed over to photograph the fabulous ReDress, boutique in Honley, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. This was for a little personal brand shoot which would be used for their business listing on the Honley website.
Telling the story of the business
When I am doing any kind of personal brand photoshoot with an independent business, I want to tell the whole story. I knew that I wanted some pictures of the exterior, (with a blue sky) and wide-angle shots of the interior both upstairs and downstairs. Lots of photographs of some of the clothes in the boutique. Some really nice product shots of some of Rachel’s favourite items and pictures of Rachel looking at clothes. So that was my plan and all in the space of an hour.
Build a rapport
I have met Rachel a few times so building a rapport wasn’t particularly difficult. I first started off photographing the interior, looking for pieces that stood out and focusing on them. ReDress boutique is an Aladins cave of goodies so it was great to have a good look around. I didn’t even know there was an upstairs so that took me by surprise.
Using light
After I had shot lots of pictures of the interior and certain areas. I asked Rachel to pick out a few of her favourite pieces which I could use to take some product photographs. I wanted an area that had good light and had a nice background just to make the photographs pop. As I knew time was pretty tight I didn’t want to set up lighting, so I turned to good old window light. Photography and lighting don’t have to be complicated and I would certainly use window light, rather than setting up flashes. It also helped illustrate how Rachel could just replicate the pictures for her own photos when taking pictures of them.
People photography
I have been a people photographer for the last fifteen years. I do know a thing or two about how to make people relax. I knew that I didn’t need anything too staged or formal for Rachel, so just asked her to pretend that she was picking out some of her favourite items. That and a little bit of humour chucked in and its job is done. Finally, I needed a couple of shots of Rachel outside of the boutique. I could see that the light wasn’t great, as it was really bright sunshine and shining in the wrong place. I knew that it would be difficult to manipulate. I love light and never stray away from it so I am always going to try and create pictures. Hard light is brilliant for artsy pictures but not necessarily what a client is after but I knew that I had more than enough good stuff.
I love personal brand photoshoots and telling the stories of independent businesses. Have a look at this page for more information https://johnsteelphotography.com/commercial/personal-branding/.If you would like a personal brand photoshoot in Yorkshire then please get in touch.
