Marketing photography for Slipstream Design
A while ago I was hired by Slipstream Design in Saltaire, West Yorkshire to create some new marketing images for them. I love repeat business and I had photographed them about ten years previous. I was astounded to see how far they had expanded in that period.

Photograpy brief
Before the shoot I was given a brief, let’s just say I didn’t understand much on the brief. Slipstream Design is full of scientists, mathematicians and lots of genius people and I don’t speak the language that they do, but, I do speak the language of understanding clients and asking questions and admitting that they are the experts. So, I knew that everything would be ok. However, the list was pretty extensive and I knew I would have my work cut out to get all of the boxes ticked so it was certainly time to crack on.
I know photography
For the first hour of the shoot, I was in the laboratory (wearing a lab coat) and I will be the first to admit that I didn’t know what I was photographing, I was handed an array of micro-chips and other components and asked to photograph certain parts of them. When I am out of my comfort zone like this I let my knowledge of photography do the talking. I know about composition and light so as long as I aimed in the right direction I knew I would be OK.
People photography
As everyone knows I’m a people photographer, that’s where my strengths are so for pretty much the rest of the day I was photographing the people in the business. I shot candid pictures of a team meeting, documentary-style coverage in the main room and also the lab, I shot two different individual setups for the headshots, a group photo. Pictures of the directors, formal, informal and candid, pictures in meetings and pretty much everything else. We achieved a lot in the day.
Summary
The shoot was great, we shot some fabulous pictures which ticked all kinds of boxes. In fact, I can’t believe how much we actually achieved in such a short time period. I am now really looking forward to seeing the new website to see how the pictures look on there.
