Jo + Andrew, The Arches, Dean Clough, Halifax, West Yorkshire
One venue that I've always wanted to photograph a wedding at is The Arches in Dean Clough, Halifax, West Yorkshire, so when Jo contacted me about her wedding I was very excited! I've known Jo for ages so knew that she wasn't going to be having a typical classical wedding, in fact in her initial email to me she was telling me about Mr & Mrs games, casinos, magicians and PIG RACING and to top it off it was all for MacMillan charity so just my kind of wedding.
The day was absolutely amazing and I know it's just what Jo and Andrew wanted. It was unusual as the ceremony didn't start until 6pm, the venue looked amazing. 150 people flocked into The Arches and waited for the arrival of Jo who arrived in a vintage Rolls Royce. The ceremony was a blessing and it was conducted by the celebrant Jane Nixon who did a fantastic job making the ceremony fun and meaningful, I love working with celebrants as they just allow me to capture exactly what I need to without dictating the rule book to me. Jo is a very organised person so she had the timings planned with military precision so as soon as the ceremony ended I whisked away the bride and groom for ten minutes of quiet time and to capture some portraits.
At this wedding there was always something happening, I had 150 guests to try to capture, the bride and groom to focus on and then I turned around and the fabulous John Danbury magician was wowing the crowds which always makes great photos. After the buffet meal (thanks very much for feeding me) Andrew and Jo did a little speech which was just the right time and perfect tone before jumping into their first dance. Usually, the first dance means it's party time head to the dancefloor but this was a little different, it was now time for the first PIG RACE! I've photographed lots of weddings but this was my first pig racing experience and I love it! Don't get a photo booth, get some pigs and have some races (top tip). It was ACE everyone was shouting at toy pigs to get them to run faster (I know, it's a bit crazy) but it was so much fun! Also, at the same time, there were tables of blackjack and roulette so loads of guests were gambling (not for real money).
The band Psycho Slinkys rocked up and they had everyone on the dancefloor throwing some shapes. I was really impressed by the band so they're definitely going on my (I can recommend list). All in all, it was a FANTASTIC wedding which was just the bride's friends and family having a BIG party, getting drunk, dancing and racing pigs.
Thank you for allowing me to photograph your special day.
Congratulations Mr & Mrs Hawley.
