Wedding photography at Standedge Visitor Centre, Marsden

Jo and Angus’s wedding in Marsden, West Yorkshire
A few week’s ago I had the pleasure of photographing Jo and Angus’s beautiful wedding at the fabulous Standedge Visitor Centre in Marsden, Huddersfield. My brief was to capture the day, hardly any posed pictures and just capture the day which is something that I love. As a documentary wedding photographer this was a dream job and to be honest, I have been waiting years to shoot at a wedding at Standedge Visitor Centre and it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Bridal preparation
Most of my weddings start with bridal preparation but Jo didn’t want this. As a wedding photographer, I respect what my clients want so I’m always happy to meet at the venue. Being a typical winter wedding in West Yorkshire the weather had decided to have a good spread of snow on the night before the wedding which looked stunning. As I wasn’t covering the bride preparation I made sure I arrived at the venue nice and early so I could get a good look around and take some pictures of the rooms setup.
Wedding Co-ordinator and team
I have shot photographed hundreds of weddings and you can never underestimate the role of a wedding co-ordinator. Bev was absolutely amazing, I loved working with her and it makes everyone’s job so much easier when everyone works as a team. If you get a great team on the day weddings can run perfectly and this was certainly the case. Whilst we are talking about a team I must give a shout out to RachAls kitchen who did a brilliant job creating gorgeous food and I even got some which is a double bonus.
Documentary wedding photography
I pride myself on being a multi-award winning documentary wedding photographer and my couples hire me because of this. Most of my clients just want me to capture the day and to tell the story of the day and that’s exactly what I did. After I had captured some pictures of the rooms and details Angus the groom arrived. I could tell that Angus was really excited so the next half an hour I spent capturing pictures of lots of hugs and kisses when guests arrived. I had been asked by Jo to keep an eye out for her sons arriving. The wedding car was a little Morris Minor so watching two lads over 6 feet tall was quite a sight. After a while, all the guests were ushered up to the ceremony room as the bride arrived.
It’s all about the bride
I rushed outside once again to see the bride and her daughters arrival in the Morris Minor. Jo looked incredible and she had the most stunning boots on. A couple of minutes to compose herself and it was time to get married. The ceremony room looked stunning and it was great to have some chilled out registrars (in fact all the registrars this year have been good) Everyone was smiling and chatting and I could see that Angus the groom was nervous yet excited. The ceremony went without a hitch and it was now time for confetti.
Group shots and bridal portraits
Winter weddings can be fantastic, especially if it snows but one thing you always have to be aware of is how quickly it gets dark. I knew that it would be dark by 4 pm so there was no time to waste. Jo and Angus had requested a group shot of everyone, by this time it was nearly 4 pm. With only a few minutes of light left, freezing cold conditions and slippery ice it was going to be tight. I rushed to the far side of the canal to grab a shot of everyone. A couple of minutes later and the shot was done. I then took this time to get a few very quick pictures of the bride and groom.
Speeches
Once again Jo and Angus didn’t want to stick to tradition and have the usual 3 speeches. Instead, the bride and groom wanted to say a few thank yous. Once again the wedding day was a big party and a celebration with their friends and family and my job were to capture the day. Everyone ate gorgeous food and then Danny Charles Music rocked his guitar and played some tunes and he was brilliant.
Party Time
To finish off a fantastic day it was now time to party. After the first dance everyone hit the dancefloor and the night continued. I was happy to see that Angus the groom had some fab dance moves and even did a mean air guitar.
Overall it was an amazing day for a very lovely couple.
Congratulations Jo and Angus and thanks for having me.
